History of Gruen Watches

Gruen was originally founded in Ohio by Dietrich Gruen. The first company was known as the Columbus Watch Company and it is making watches under his name that Dietrich perfected his watch making skills. The Columbus company used cased movements imported from Swiss companies along with a patented safety pinion developed by Gruen himself. The reason these first watches became so popular was largely due to their convenient size compared to many other watches which were available during this time period.

Although by the 1890s Columbus was still growing Dietrich Gruen decided to leave the company and found the new Gruen watch company. To cover as much of the market as possible this new company manufactured both 16 and 18 size watches as well as different jewel versions. The original watches have serial numbers which start at around 60000.

All watches manufactured by Gruen are of a high quality and are made using only the finest materials and workmanship. The company was also one of the first in America to start manufacturing wristwatches – they released both a men’s and women’s version in 1908 which turned out to be a popular collection. The company also manufactured military watches during the first World War.

Gruen Veri-Thin Pocket Watch

The Gruen Veri-Thin pocket watch is probably one of the most popular and well-known watches manufactured by the company. The Veri-Thin was created with fashion in mind and was manufactured completely in the US from the 1940s onwards. Today, if you wanted to buy Gruen Veri-Thin watches the price could be hundreds of dollars if not more. Many Veri-Thin watches are still running fine today although you should check a particular watch is in working condition before you buy. You should also check the quality and condition of the movement to decide whether the watch is likely to require new parts in the near future. The price of the watch will also depend on how old it is.

Gruen Curvex Watch

Without doubt the most popular and famous Gruen watch is the Gruen curvex. There are a number of different versions of the Curvex watch including gold filled cases and gold numbers. If you want to buy Gruen Curvex watches then make sure you check the model number to see how old the watch is.

Gruen Pentagon Watch

The Gruen Pentagon 50th Anniversary watch is a highly sort after model and hence is one of the more expensive on the market. When looking for Gruen Pentagon watches for sale make sure you know the model number, whether it’s been signed as a 50th anniversary model or not and whether the crystal is an original.  When buying any vintage Gruen watch you should also ensure that casing is in good condition otherwise this can affect the resale value.
