The Omega Seamaster collection is a range of waterproof watches that was originally established in 1932, although it wasn’t given its current name until around fifteen years later. To begin with the Seamaster range had a traditional style to match the current trend of dress watches but in recent times has become much more modern in design. Current Omega Seamaster watches are sporty and contemporary as well as being sturdy and waterproof.

Although the Seamaster is aimed at divers it was made to be a dress watch. This is because when the first Seamaster was manufactured wristwatches were easily damaged by even a small amount of water and hence Omega wanted to solve this problem for both casual wearers and divers. Today, diver’s watches are common. The first Seamasters were water resistant down to a depth of around 30 metres – today’s models can go much deeper than this.
The Omega Seamaster collection is large and contains a number of watches with a variety of styles. There is also a range of water resistance levels depending on the buyer’s personal requirements. Some of the watches come with a helium escape valve although certain models (including the earlier versions) do not.
There are a number of different materials used for making Seamasters. If weight is an issue then it’s usually a good idea to go for a titanium model as these are the lightest. You can also buy Seamasters made of steel or gold.
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean
The Planet Ocean is a popular automatic chronograph watch contained within the Seamaster collection. At around $4,000.00 it isn’t cheap but the quality of the casing and movement is high. Some of the features of the Planet Ocean include a domed and scratch resistant crystal, water resistance down to around 600 metres and an automatic Swiss movement that doesn’t require a battery. The watch also includes a unidirectional bezel and a power reserve of over 40 hours.
One distinguishing feature of the Omega Planet Ocean is that it’s a relatively heavy watch. For some this may be an annoyance but many people find the weight comforting and a sign of the quality of the watch. Other versions of the Planet Ocean include the Planet Ocean Chrono and the Planet Ocean Big Size.
Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronometer
The Seamaster Aqua Terra chronometer costs around $3000.00 and has a simple yet stylish design. Like the Planet Ocean it includes a high quality automatic Swiss movement and comes with a scratch resistant crystal. It’s also water resistant down to 150 metres. Many of the models also come with a see-through back to allow a view of the movement.
The Aqua Terra is one of the most understated watches by Omega but it shouldn’t be overlooked. It functions perfectly and is highly durable. There are also Aqua Terra Annual Calendar, Quartz and Chronograph models available.
Omega Seamaster 300m Chrono Diver
The 300m Chrono is the perfect watch for divers. It features a date dial, helium escape valve, small seconds timer and a unidirectional rotating bezel to avoid confusion whilst on a dive. The watch is also a chronometer and a chronograph. Seamaster 300m Quartz and GMT models are also available.
