History
Due to the large amount experience that Helmut Sinn had in the aviation industry it is no surprise that this is the market Sinn originally focused on. The company started by manufacturing aviation watches that could be used by both the pilot and navigational crew members. Mr Sinn created both the design and specifications of the watches in order to ensure that it included the features most sought after by aviation professionals. The design of Sinn has always been based around creating a watch style which matches the timepieces functionality.
When Sinn first began manufacturing watches they sold through a different route to most watch makers. Instead of selling wholesale the watches were sold through direct marketing which cut down the costs. For this reason vintage Sinn watches became known for their high quality and competitive prices. As you’d expect, the watches were very popular amongst pilots although were also bought by people who didn’t work in the industry but enjoyed the watches style.
The company recently changed its name to Sinn - Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt (special watches from Frankfurt) and this coincided with a range of new watches becoming available. Helmut Sinn no longer owns the company as he sold it in 1994 to Lother Schmidt.
Today, the company sells in excess of 10,000 watches each and every year. Although many are still sold via direct marketing there are also authenticated watch depots which sell Sinn Spezialuhren watches. Helmut Sinn is still a part of the watch making industry although he no longer manufactures watches for Sinn. Instead, he’s involved in brands such as Guinard and Chronosport.
Vintage Sinn 1736 Classic
The 1736 watch manufactured by Sin is an example of an elegant and stylish timepiece. The design focuses on simplicity and only includes minutes, hour and date displays. The elements of the watches are purposefully designed and arranged to emphasize the simplicity of the case and this is offset by a completely white watch dial.
Other features of the watch include a 100 meter water resistance rating, anti reflective crystal base and a resistance to low pressure.
Sinn Model 556
The Model 556 is a more technical watch compared with the 1736 classic although doesn’t have the same number of complications as other Sinn watches. If you’re looking for a durable watch that can be used on an everyday basis then the 556 may be perfect for you. Unlike the 1736 it also includes a second hand as well as minute, hour and a date display.
Other watches included within the Sinn collection include the Series 203, Series UX (both diving watches) and the Series 243 Ladies watch. The price of vintage Sinn watches – as with any other brand – depends on the exact model, the age and condition of the timepiece.
