Vintage Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Daytona comes in two series – the original which was manufactured until the 1980s and the newer series. Vintage Rolex Daytona watches are often extremely valuable because they were produced in such small quantities – especially the first series. Newer Rolex Daytona watches are certified chronometers and also come with various chronograph capabilities. The Daytona is named after the Daytona 24 hour race which the company sponsors.

Amongst the rarest vintage Rolex Daytona watches is the Paul Newman dial model. These are often extremely difficult to find and identify but can be worth much more than regular Daytona models. There are still Daytona watches being produced today but the original, vintage models are much more valuable due to their scarcity.

The first models produced in the vintage Rolex Daytona were not part of the Oyster collection. This means that they didn’t have the same crowns and screw timing buttons that come with other versions. Originally, the Rolex Daytona used a manual winding movement and these are amongst the most valuable versions for collectors. This is partly due to the fact that they are relatively rare but also because they have proven to be a fine example of a vintage yet accurate watch movement.

Things to watch out for when buying a vintage Rolex Daytona Cosmograph are that it’s in a good condition, the dial doesn’t show any signs of major damage and that the movement still functions correctly. Without a properly functioning movement the watch becomes much less valuable. You also need to choose whether it’s essential to buy a chronograph version of the watch or not. The rarer a particular model of watch is the most it is likely to be worth and this is what you should always keep in mind.

Another factor is which materials a Rolex Daytona model uses. Many have stainless steel casing with a stainless steel bracelet. There are also different materials used for the watch face. For example, some vintage Rolex Daytona models have a silver dial.

Vintage Rolex Daytona Cosmograph watches can cost tens of thousands of dollars for the rarest versions. They are extremely popular amongst horological enthusiasts as well as fans of Rolex. Buying used Rolex Daytona watches on auction sites such as eBay is usually the best way to get a fair price for a particular model although, as always, you need to be careful who you are buying from.
